Lower Elementary Newsletter - February 28, 2013

2/28/14

Dear RiverRun Families,

The RiverRun Olympics continued this week with the completion of hockey.  All the teams played hard as they endured the cold temperatures.  Many parents also braved the cold to come out and root for their Olympians.   Next week we hope to finish with the curling competition on Wednesday and the closing ceremonies on Thursday at 2:15 in the social hall.  We hope to see those families that are able to make it at the closing ceremony with a special performance by the South Korean Team.

In the classroom, we have started The Timeline of Writing, another of the Montessori Great Lessons.  Our journey started about 22,000 years ago with early man and cave painting, which we viewed through the discovery of cave pictographs in Lascaux France by four teenage boys and their dog in the 1940s and Discovery in the Cave by Mark Dubowski.  The children are making paintings of their own on large pieces of paper using paint made from clay and ash.  We will create our own ancient cave, filled with paintings and reenact a modern-day discovery.

The elders are working on their multiplication facts and we continue the novel study of The Facts and Fictions of Minna Pratt.  The children discuss the novel in some depth and explore how the author uses many of the techniques we have been learning about in Writers’ Workshop.

The State Reports are moving along as well.  Rachel has been sitting with two to three children a day, helping them read and writes information they find interesting in their own words.  Some children are almost ready to type up their reports.

Next Friday myself, Debbie, Rachel and Maureen will be heading to N.J. for a conference for Montessori educators.  We are looking forward to it; Debbie and I found the conference very invigorating last year.  We will have substitute teachers in on Friday.  Because of this we will have Pizza Friday on Thursday.  Liz, Michael’s mom, will be making a treat for everyone to supplement the pizza.  She is thinking either crepes or a treat called Bird's Nests.

Don’t forget to check out pictures that have been put up by Rachel on www.riverruncommunitymontessori.wordpress.com   The children are using an online typing program, if you want them to practice at home visit www.bbc.co.uk
