Our community gathering was a great success. The Lower Elementary spent three days in the
kitchen preparing authentic Native American dishes. They prepared Pinole, a traditional drink
made of cornmeal, honey and cinnamon, Green Succotash, a soup featuring the
“three sisters”, Thumbprint Bread (Kaolatquvil) from the Hopi tribe, Cherokee
Bean Balls, Hickory Nut Soup from the Creek Indians, Indian Fry Bread, Baked
Beans, Indian Ice Cream, and Wagmizawasna from the Sioux tribe. The Upper Elementary presented their original skit called, “Who Really
Discovered America?” In the skit, eight
contestants (explorers and Native Americans) gave testimony to prove that they
should be given the credit for discovering the Americas. Songs and humor added to the delightful
performance!
