Upper Elementary Newsletter- Friday November 8, 2013

November 8, 2013

Dear Families:

We seem to be finding a word, or two, of the week to focus on in our classroom.  This week one of the words is deoxyribonucleic acid.  Pronouncing and spelling the word has been a fun challenge.  We broke the word into syllables, and we wrote out the pronunciation from the dictionary.  Our plan is to look at our cheek cells under our microscope after we learn more about cells.  The other word that has captured our interest is guffaw.  Several of us tried to spell it before we looked it up in the dictionary.  Some of our guesses included gafagh, gafah, gaufagh and gaufa.

Our library books on animals are due back to the Schenectady Public Library next week.  Therefore, we are working diligently to take notes from our books.  Some of us are now gathering facts from encyclopedias and periodicals too.

This week all of our explorers chose a theme song for our skit, “Who Really Discovered America?”  Now we need to rewrite the words to represent each explorer’s experience.  We are excited about sharing our original production with our families on Thursday, December 12 at 5:30 pm.   The evening will also include Native American food and a display of our artwork.  We will let you know as soon as possible how much the cost of the dinner will be.   (We’re still working on the menu!)

Yesterday we began writing letters to soldiers serving in Afghanistan.  We have decided we would like to be a part of a service project to support our military men and women currently deployed in war zones by collecting donated items and shipping them to members overseas.  A list of suggested items is being sent with this newsletter.  If you or your child would like to contribute an item, please send it to school by December 1.  The items, along with our letters, will be sent the first week of December.   We know we can make a difference for the men and women who are serving our country.

Finally, I will not be in the classroom next week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Nancy Adis will be here with the children.  I know your child will have a productive and pleasant three days under Nancy’s guidance!

Have a great weekend,
