Dear
RiverRun Families,
After learning more about Samurai and the amount of training expected of them, not many children wanted to be a Samurai. We continued our discussion on Japan by learning about the Japanese form of anime called Manga. They were all very interested in it, therefore I will go to the library this weekend to see if I can find some comic books illustrated in this style. We also learned how to pronounce the Japanese numbers one-ten, which was derived from the Chinese numbering system. We all tried Mochi which I bought from the Honest Weight Food Co-op. Mochi is a treat made of brown rice, served most often to celebrate the New Year. Many of the children really liked it.
On Wednesday we went down to the
sink area with our visitors from the Open House to watch a demonstration on how
water seeks its own level. We did this
work using two clear bowls filled with varying amounts of water; one was put on
an inch high platform and we constructed a siphon with a clear plastic
tube. We were able to watch the water “equalize”
no matter how we changed the water level or the height of the platform.
In the area of geometry, lessons
were given on parts of lines, broken lines, polygons and simple closed regions
(circles). The elders looked at angles, learned how to measure them and are
able to identify the vertex.
Dianna, our new music teacher,
had the children moving in time to different time signatures from various
genres of music. The activities were fun
and we learned a lot. We are so glad to
have her as part of our community.
Thanks to our parent volunteers, we are able to have both yoga and music
teachers. This past week Heidi came in
for a few hours to work with the Upper El while Debbie attended training. I also want to thank Juliana for coming in to
help with the Open House. We had a lot of families come to see our wonderful
school. Lastly, I want to thank Fatima
who has been trying to manage our unruly library. We have a lot of great books which we use
often, but do not have a really good system for easy access. She also came in to substitute today while
Debbie attended a memorial service.

character-that is the goal of true education.”

I hope that you all enjoy your extended weekend,
