Dear RiverRun Families,
This week the children learned about
life during the Mesozoic Era. Some of the interesting developments of this
time were the appearance of dinosaurs, birds and flowering plants. The children were very interested in the
fact that birds and dinosaurs have a common ancestry and we took a closer look
at that relationship. We learned it is
believed that birds are linked to theropods; carnivorous dinosaurs that had
short forelimbs and walked on their hind legs. These theropods
had air sacs similar to birds and their scales bear a resemblance to feathers.
Other lessons given this week were on grammar, the First years were presented a work to further their understanding of
adjectives and the Second Years and
Elder are practicing symbolizing complicated sentences. We found ourselves engaged in interesting
discussions on adverbs and adjectives. It
can be difficult to identify parts of speech in sentences such as “My drink was
cold and fizzy.” Is fizzy an adverb or
an adjective? In the end it was agreed
that fizzy wan describing the noun drink and not an action, and therefore is an
adjective.
Jessica gave her first Spanish lesson; we learned how to greet
each other and listened to a book about volcanos. We all
really enjoyed the lesson and look forward to learning and practicing Spanish.
