Upper Elementary Newsletter - June 6, 2014

June 6, 2014

Dear families,

On Tuesday Nancy Adis was subbing for Debbie.    While Nancy was here we worked on our poet studies.  I, Abi, am doing Emily Dickinson.  Grace is doing Emily Bronte, Maddy is doing J.R .R. Tolkien, and Emma is doing Robert Louis Stevenson.

This week we went on two field trips.  We went to Mabee Farm and learned how to make butter and about the farm life of the Mabee family.

We also went to Emma and Grace’s church and built clay sculptures of our spirit animals. Suzanna (the sculptor) has them right now and is going to put them in her kiln at her home.  She will bring them back in two weeks and then we will paint them.  Also, since we missed gym on Wednesday, Marc planned a running event for us at the Union track. The upper El ran a half a mile and the lower El ran a third of a mile.  We also played a game with Marc.  Here is how to play:  First you get a soccer ball and climb up a hill. Then you say something like, “20 points if you catch it in the air; 15 if it rolls and then you get it.” Then you kick it down the hill to your classmates.  If you catch it you get as many points as the kicker said.  It was a very muddy day because it had rained the day before.  I was going to get the ball and it just happened that there was a huge mud puddle in front of me, and I tripped over the ball and thankfully the ball saved me from getting my pants wet,  but I still got my legs and shirt wet.  I got right up and said, “What?  I only got 50 points!”

We are planning to go to the library for the last time this year on Thursday the 12th. We will stop and get pizza at Pizza Buono for the end of the year treat so we will need money for lunch.  Some of us who have bus passes will need a little more money for our final trip home too.  Next week we’ll figure out how much money we each need, and we’ll send a note to let our parents know the amount.  After lunch we’ll walk back to our school along Union Street.
