Lower Elementary Newsletter - March 14, 2014

3/14/14

Dear RiverRun Families

Spring is on its way!  With the winter cold almost to an end and the much welcome light we will be re-energized and ready for busy work weeks.  The children are making good progress on the State Reports.  Many have completed the information gathering stage and are beginning to type.  In the last Friday letter I suggested a typing program we use here.  It is free, but you may have had difficulty connecting to it.  Here is the website again; www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/.com

We continue to discuss the Timeline of Writing.  The cave paintings were completed by the children on Tuesday.   We re-enacted the finding of the caves in Lascaux as we journeyed down to our basement in the dark with flashlights looking for our dog Robot.  As we searched for Robot we “discovered” the painting.  We also talked about St. Patrick, who was born in Britain, kidnapped as a teenager by Irish raiders attacking his families estate and was held captive for about 6 years.  During his captivity he became a shepherd and a religious man.  Once he returned to Britain he studied to be a priest and later returned to Ireland as a missionary.  During his work as a missionary he taught the Roman alphabet to the Irish.  His teachings helped advance writing in Europe.

Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.” –Maria Montessori
