Dear River Run Families,
We had an exciting week talking and writing about insects. Unfortunately I could not attend the field trip due to illness in my family, but I heard the movie was great. I am hoping, as I am sure you are, that the children will remain healthy. Today everyone was present for the first time in weeks.
We had a lot of great works out on insects and I think the children learned a lot. As the weather is getting nicer by the day we can look forward to seeing some insects out doors.
Our cooking program continues with an Irish breakfast of eggs, potatoes and Irish soda bread. The children all wrote limericks; they were very funny, so if you did not get a chance to come to the community lunch ask to hear your child's limerick.
Enjoy the wonderful weather!
Amy

This week the students enjoyed learning more about Irish culture through Irish Folktales and cooking Irish foods for our Family Meal today. We enjoyed having family members in the classroom to share with us. Some students read aloud the limericks they wrote this week. Students also practiced recorders and experimented with various instruments including xylophones, a kazoo, small keyboards, and a lap harp. Madeleine and her sister, Gwen, played some songs for us on their viola and violin. The weather was agreeable enough, so we headed outside for activities and enjoyed the coming of spring!
Earlier in the week, we enjoyed learning from Esther Willison about the five sizes of recorders and seeing her wooden recorder collection and hearing her play. We also learned about self-defense and respect from guest Tae Kwon Do instructors, James and Lira Pai, on Tuesday. Each student practiced kicks and hand techniques and had the opportunity to break a board. Even Mary Kaye and Nancy broke a board!
Wednesday morning we left the classroom to head over to Proctor’s Theatre for the 3D show, “Bugs! A Rainforest Adventure.” We learned about the natural cycle of life for bugs and got up close visuals – sometimes VERY close! Special thanks to Teresa Foster, Ileana Hancu, and Rob Cassella for driving and chaperoning our students. Later that afternoon in art we drew colorful bugs and insects based on clues (about their features) that we heard in a story.
Looking ahead, I just want to remind you that there is no school next Thursday and Friday. Also, our newest staff member, Debbie Castle, will start with us on Monday and Wednesday will be Mary Kaye’s last regular day with us.
Finally, you should have found a SilverGraphics packet in your child’s folder with the scanned artwork in it. Please take a look at this over the weekend. If you are interested in purchasing any items with your child’s artwork on them, please note that the orders are due next week (by Wednesday at the latest).
Have a nice weekend,
Nancy
