Dear RiverRun Families,
This week seemed to go by very quickly. On Tuesday, Greg Reid gave a wonderful presentation on the story of the Zodiac in honor of Chinese New Year. He also brought in some tasty treats. We thank him very much for volunteering his time. We also spent some time preparing for your visit on Thursday, it was a fantastic night. We have also been reading about Abraham Lincoln and will read about George Washington next week. The last of the demonstrations on the Work of Air were given; some of you were able to see the demonstration on When Warm and Cold Currents Meet. Next week we will look at the clouds!
February break is fast upon us. Often breaks can be a busy time for families and we do not want to burden you with projects or other time consuming school work. Therefore, we only ask that every student read one book and have it completed before we return to school on February 28th. We will begin another book report activity that first week back. We would like the students to think about selecting a book this weekend. If they need help choosing a book which is manageable or if they would like to bring home a book from the RiverRun library, we will have plenty of time to help them with that next week.
Enjoy,
Amy

It was nice to see all of you last night at the Gallery Showcase and Parent Education Night. I hope you enjoyed seeing the students’ work and being the recipient of lessons from them. The students were excited and proud to show you their work and teaching you a lesson provided them with a valuable experience in stepping into the role of “teacher” and out of the role of “learner”.
In the afternoon program we have continued to learn about New York State and are now shifting our focus to include other states as well. As we learn about the United States, we’ve begun to discuss which of the fifty states each of us has visited. The students mapped out those states this week and next week we will work on a map for the whole class so we can see if there are any states that none of us have been to. In our PE program we are currently working on hand-eye coordination skills with jump rope activities.
You may have heard the students mention homework sheets lately and I want to take a minute to clarify. Several RiverRun students have requested homework, so we have a new basket with daily homework activities which are optional for those students who are interested. If there is something that Amy or I are asking the whole class to do, we’ll be sure to send an email or note home explaining that.
Next week on Monday, students will be celebrating Valentine’s Day by exchanging cards. Please remind your child to bring a card in for each classmate. They may also bring in a treat or snack to share with the class if they choose. Then on Friday the 18th we have Parent-Teacher Conference Day and no school for students. We are looking forward to meeting with parents to discuss your child’s progress this year. If you haven’t already done so, please sign up with Jacqui Foster (Board of Trustees Member) for a parent conference, which are available between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. every half hour. You can reach Jacqui by phone at 382-5982 or by email at jacqfo@nycap.rr.com and are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.
Best wishes,
Nancy Adis
