Outing - NYS Museum

On December 8th, RiverRun students explored the New York State Museum as they begin work on new student interest projects related to New York.  Many thanks to our parent drivers Teresa, Kate, Rob, and Nancy for making the trip possible by providing transportation between the school and museum!

A museum educator shared information on the animals of New York and the practices of the Iroqois Nation people as they respected and hunted these animals.  Black bear skins were used for door coverings and coats, while the warm fur of the beaver was used for hats, collars, mittens, and shoes.

Students explored the model longhouse and learned about construction techniques, the council flame (with smoke hole above) and how many people lived in such a small place.  Each longhouse had one family (about 20 people) for each smoke hole and up to 6 smoke holes per longhouse.  That's up to one hundred and twenty people in very close quarters!

A ride on the museum's 115 year old, hand-carved carousel rounded out the visit to the NYS Museum.
