Friday (Wednesday!) Letter - 12.22.10

Dear RiverRun Families,

We really enjoyed seeing so many of you at the RiverRun Holiday Send-Off today and the students enjoyed sharing their songs with you. Preparations for this performance helped them practice matching their singing pace with the group, holding their own during a round, and practicing good presentation skills.

The students also enjoyed preparing the snacks that they shared with you today. This is the fourth time they’ve handled the food preparation/baking/cooking activities and they are all becoming more confident in this practical life skill. We plan to continue to provide this experience for the students each month.

In the New Year, we expect that the RiverRun classroom will be outfitted with a new computer – thanks to the efforts of parent volunteers, Kathryn Lahn, Rob Cassella, and Brian Menyuk, and thanks to funding from the Mason-Kahn Foundation. We plan to introduce the students to homerow typing as well as provide simple lessons in word processing as many students are very interested in using the computer. If, over the break, you have the opportunity to allow your child to use the computer (perhaps educational games or Microsoft Word), many of them would enjoy that as it seems to be a big item of interest in the classroom lately.

We hope that you’ll all enjoy a change of pace from your usual routine during the winter break and perhaps find some time for family fun, new experiences, and even relaxation. We have asked each student to read at least one book over the winter break and to bring this book back in to school on Monday, January 3, 2011 for use in a classroom activity. Of course many students have told us that they’ll be reading more than just one book and that’s super. But please remind your child to at least complete one book and to bring that book in.

We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!

Nancy Adis and Amy Poole
