Dear RiverRun Families,
This week the last group finished reading their novel, Wagon Wheels, and we have started to use our Trophies readers which came in from the school districts. The stories are interesting and provide good vocabulary. We read the stories in groups, everyone seemed to enjoy this experience.
We were also given some math workbooks from the school districts. These books have been placed on our shelves as an independent work that can be chosen during the work period. Workbooks are a novelty in our classroom so the children all wanted to try them out.
The holiday season is in full swing as it is a time for giving we thought it would be nice to try and do some community service. As I am not from Schenectady I was unsure of our charitable organizations, but with some guidance from Nancy and Jacqui I contacted North East Parent and Child and obtained a list of items they could use for the families they serve. Below is a list of items they need. If each family could donate an item it would be a blessing for a family in need. I will take the unwrapped items to North East on Friday December 17th. I apologize for the short notice, but it took time for me to gather this information.
Educational toys
Family games
Books
Winter clothing for all ages
Towels
Bedding (twin & full)
Dishes/dinnerware
CDTA bus passes
Toiletries/Lotion
Shaving kits/electric razors
Household cleaning supplies
Tool kits
Gift cards to Target or Walmart
Men’ & women’s jewelry/watches
Small kitchen appliances
Best wishes and stay warm, Amy

This week RiverRun students enjoyed exploring the New York State Museum. We learned more about the native peoples and animals during our educator-led program, The People of the Longhouse, and many other aspects of New York State during exploration of the museum exhibits. Check out our blog to see the interesting pictures of the students on the field trip!
Other work this week included writing autobiographies and drawing self-portraits in a style inspired by Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Some students continued learning from published biographies and others shared with their fellow students what they had learned on their completed biography studies. All students are learning the locations of the fifty states and their capitals.
After reading the book, “What You Never Knew About Fingers, Forks, & Chopsticks,” the class has decided to try using chopsticks and to sample Chinese food from the Lucky Wok (down the block from school) for next Friday’s lunch. More information will come home next week about ordering.
The students would also like to invite families to the Holiday Sendoff on Wednesday, December 22nd, our last day of school before the winter break. Please join us in the classroom at 1:30 p.m. for songs and snacks, if you are able.
Have a nice weekend, Nancy Adis
