Dear RiverRun Families,
I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving break and were able to spend time with family and friends.
This week we started to work with money and talk about it’s value. Any opportunity you have to let your children handle money to pay for goods will help reinforce how much things cost and the idea of trading goods for money. This is a good time of year to have them make this connection given all the commercialism geared toward our children to get us to spend.
Today I taught the children how to play the Dreidel game. We used pennies as the game pieces in order to tie it to the theme of money. I also brought in potato pancakes and applesauce. They were a big hit. I gave out my grandmother’s secret recipe which is… shred some potatoes (7 maybe), add an egg, some baking soda, flour, diced onions, salt and pepper then fry! It’s as easy as that.
If anyone would like to share their family’s holiday tradition please let us know and we can arrange a time for you to come in or just send something in, like a favorite book, and we will share it.
Enjoy your weekend, Amy

This week RiverRun students have been busy learning from published biographies. In addition to gathering information and considering the affects to their own lives, students also plotted the life span of the person they researched on a class timeline so that we can better understand the time period in which the person lived.
With no snow on the ground and a few leaves left on the trees, we fit in one last autumn art project. Students created autumn leaf prints using pressed leaves we’d gathered on a walk to Steinmetz Park earlier in the year. Looking ahead toward the winter season, we refreshed our memories (and learned anew) with some songs about winter and snow.
In writing time, students began using graphic organizers to organize their thoughts prior to writing first drafts. This weekend, the students are being asked to complete a word web about themselves and bring it back to class on Monday. Please remind your child to do this short homework assignment. We’ve also sent home an extra word web so that they can use it to describe another person or thing at home if they choose. Any extra work they do with word webs is optional, but please be sure to have them complete their own and return it on Monday.
Next week, the students will be hearing about our upcoming New York State Interest Projects and then going to the New York State Museum on Wednesday for more independent exploration as well a program on the longhouses. Please be sure to send in a booster seat that day if your child uses one.
Finally, next Friday will once again be a Pizza Friday. Students can bring in $1/slice for one or two slices of pizza if they choose.
Enjoy your weekend, Nancy Adis
