Friday Letter - 11.12.2010

November 12, 2010

Dear RiverRun Families,

Today we made it over to Steinmetz Park for PE/recess time and as a make up for not being able to go last Friday.  It was nice to get outside in what may be the last of the warmish fall weather!  It sounds like many of the students enjoyed outside time on their Veteran’s Day off yesterday also.

Earlier this week the students exercised their creativity using tempera paints on wood and/or by painting the pinch pots they created last week.  Another day each student was able to create a Funny Food Face using a bagel, cream cheese, raw vegetables and fresh fruit.  This activity provided the opportunity for discussion about hand washing, choosing fresh foods, and trying new things.

Students also learned more about Veteran’s Day by discussing the reason for the holiday and participating in a related book-making activity.  Students had more opportunities this week to observe their environment, gather data, and depict the results in a bar graph.  We also began work on reading/interpreting graphs. During writing time, students wrote about Thanksgiving and/or things they were thankful for.  They also explored the use of adjectives in writing colorful, descriptive sentences.

Throughout the week, students were hard at work using their new reading comprehension cards, participating in novel studies, studying their spelling words, and getting morning lessons in many areas of math, grammar, and language studies.

Thank you to all of the families who diligently sent in their permission slips and payments for advance ticket purchases for upcoming RiverRun field trips.  We have a busy November and December, providing many opportunities for your children to get out in the community and experience new things.  And we even have one additional date to add to your calendar – Wednesday, December 8th the class will be heading to the New York State Museum for an instructor-led program on the Native American longhouses.  Permission slips will go home shortly, but we wanted to let you know right away as we’ll need parents to volunteer to drive and chaperone our students.

We look forward to seeing many of you next Friday at our Thanksgiving Feast.

Sincerely, Nancy and Amy
