Friday Letter - 09.12.2012

9/21/12

Dear RiverRun Families,

This has been a short, but exciting week. Tuesday’s weather made our trip to the Food Bank Farm interesting. Despite the weather our children went out and picked swiss chard without complaint. Our feet were stuck in the mud and our hands pruned, but that did not deter anyone. The visit to the Nature Center was also wonderful. The program they had was just right for our age groups, full of fun and good information. We hope to visit them again. They offer snow shoeing, so let’s hope we have some snow this winter season.

This week we had a short spelling list. We are working on the long e sound when the letter e is coupled with a as in the words eat or cleave (a word used in Gay-Neck). We used the Trophies books to start to work on comprehension and reading fluency. I finished reading You Wouldn’t Want to be a Suffragist to the class and we are now reading about Harriet Tubman in preparation for our trip to Seneca Falls.

For both art and Writer’s Workshop we have been comparing different art forms illustrators use. We used tissue paper to create texture, using Eric Carle’s works as examples.

“it would be ridiculous to talk of male and female atmospheres, male and female springs or rains, male and female sunshine…how much more ridiculous is it in relation to mind, to soul, to thought, where there is as undeniable no such thing as sex, to talk of male and female education and of male and female school.” Written by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

Enjoy the weekend,

Amy and Debbie
