Friday Letter - 05.06.11

May 6, 2011

Dear RiverRun Families,

We have picked a play to do this spring. All roles have been assigned and the children are very excited about performing for you. The children have begun to practice their lines and soon we will start working on the costumes and set. Next week we will brainstorm about things we can use from our homes for the set and costumes. We hope to have a date soon for the play, stay tuned!

Have a great weekend.

Amy

Today the class attended Alice In Wonderland Follies at The Egg. This “Ballet Vaudeville” combined many different styles of dance and music from turn-of-the-century vaudeville houses while following Alice on her magical journeys. The music and dancing and costumes were beautiful! In the afternoon, the class discussed elements of the show that we had read about in the book. We explored the many similarities and differences, as well as the fact that the show incorporated elements from the next story Through the Looking Glass, which we had not read. If your child is interested, you may want to read that story at home to learn more about Tweedledee and Tweedledum!

I am sure many of you are interested in an update on the humanitarian project that RiverRun students have been working on. Last Sunday many of the students joined Debbie at the Schenectady Green Market where they sold carp kites and solicited donations in order to raise money for the children of Japan. They raised $200.40 through their efforts and this money is being sent to UNICEF for distribution to Japan. Our students had the valuable experience of participating in a hands-on way to help others.

Looking ahead to next week, Greg Lindenfelser will be coming to RiverRun to begin gardening work with the students. We also hope to get to Steinmetz Park at least once if the weather is agreeable as there are many plants in bloom and things in the pond to explore. Finally, Friday will be the Pizza Friday for this month and you may send in $1/slice for one or two slices of pizza if your child is interested. Families are always welcome to join us for recess and/or lunch on Fridays.

Happy Mother’s Day and Best Wishes,
Nancy
