Dear RiverRun Families,
This week we continued to use our Trophies readers and everyone is enjoying the interesting stories.
Thank you to all of the families that were able to send in items for distribution by North East Parent and Child to families in need. I was happy to take a whole trunkful of items over there today.
Best wishes and stay warm,
Amy

Recently the students have been learning about and practicing kickball in PE class. With our wide range of student ages and interests, you may not be surprised to hear that some students are quite experienced with this game and others are hearing about it (and its rules) for the first time. This experience has provided us with the opportunity to have many discussions about good sportsmanship, patience, and playing for the sake of fun and good exercise, rather than for the sake of winning. (In fact we don’t keep score and haven’t yet worked up to changing sides after three outs; rather we change sides when every team member has had one turn to kick.) Feel free to chat with your child about this experience and perhaps reinforce concepts like “bases loaded”, when you must run and when you may run, helping the team, and being happy with your personal best.
On Thursday I enjoyed traveling to Saratoga with our students and many family members for the Ramona Quimby show at the Home Made Theatre. This experience allowed the students to participate in a comparative analysis activity using a Venn diagram. As a class we discussed the many similarities and differences between the book we’d read (Ramona Quimby, Age 8) and the play. Then the students wrote a simple comparative analysis. We also used the Venn diagrams today when students compared themselves to a partner. Some students brought home extra Venn diagrams to use over the weekend for further optional exploration of this comparative tool.
Another highlight of this week was our Chinese food buffet today. After practicing with chopsticks all week (picking up smaller and smaller items) many students were very successful in using the chopsticks to pick up the rice and other food at our lunch buffet. I am also proud to note that almost every student sampled new foods and many found things they really liked. You might want to ask your child if they remember the name of one of the dishes they liked!
Looking ahead to next week, we hope to see some of you at our Holiday Sendoff on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the classroom where we’ll share songs and snacks.
Have a nice weekend, Nancy Adis
