Dear RiverRun Families,
We have had a busy and exciting week. On Monday the children were told a story about creation. Many demonstrations were given during the story to try and give an impression of how earth came to be. All the demonstrations are on our science shelf for the children to use. Any books that your family may have on creation that your child can bring in will be welcome (Maddy said she had one she wanted to share). Check out the blog as Teresa has posted pictures.
On Wednesday we had a field trip to the Pine Bush Preserve. We learned a lot about turkeys just in time for Thanksgiving. When you look through your child’s writing journals there should be an entry about this trip, so look for it and see how much there is to know about turkeys.
Novel studies continue. The children treasure this time; they like to read and to be read to. Novel studies will continue throughout the year.
Have a wonderful weekend. Amy

In addition to the special activities that Amy mentioned above, the RiverRun students welcomed Denise Watso (Noah’s mom) to class on Tuesday afternoon. Denise shared a wealth of information about Native Americans from the Abenacki tribe and shared examples of many different handcrafted items made by them. She read a Native American story and discussed the importance of sharing traditions and information through storytelling. The students were also able to use several authentic drums and shaker musical instruments while singing a medicine man chant.
RiverRun students also spent all of Thursday afternoon preparing the delicious food which they shared today at the Thanksgiving Feast. Teresa Foster (Ben’s mom) taught the students about the roles of various chefs and such (Head Chef, Sous Chef, Entrée Chef, Dining Room Manager … all the students had a role), all about knives (which one is used for what purpose), and many cooking tips. The students did all the food preparation themselves and worked really hard to treat families to this meal today.
Special thanks to Denise and Teresa for coming in to work with the students in these specialty areas. We really enjoy community visitors and these activities strengthen the school-home connection.
This week I began reading the book Ramona Quimby, Age 8 to the class during afternoon read aloud time so that the students will become familiar with the characters and general plot before the class attends the theatrical performance about Ramona at the Home Made Theatre in December. We’ll be doing some comparative writing after that field trip.
Next week is a short week. Please do let us (and your bus department) know if you are planning to have your child out of school any of the days. (For example, if you are traveling for the holiday). It really helps with our planning if we know ahead of time.
Thanks so much, Nancy
