Dear RiverRun Families,
This week we have begun our novel studies with many, but not all, the students. As the children read they will be noticing, wondering, picturing, figuring out, connecting, and guessing the author’s intentions. Each group will meet weekly with me to discuss their thoughts.
Today we explored the parts of a River. Since we live near both the Hudson and the Mohawk rivers we talked about the source, course, mouth and the upper and lower parts of these rivers. It was a messy, but fun demonstration-ask your children about it!
Last week’s crock pot cooking was great. The children did a wonderful job chopping the veggies, crushing the nuts, and measuring the ingredients. They all really love to help and seem to be more open to trying new foods if they have prepared it themselves.
Enjoy your weekend,
Amy Poole

This week we continued to read about early explorations to North America and learned more about Native Americans. Each student made and decorated their own clay pinch pot in a way which mirrored days long ago.
We also spent time discussing Election Day and the opportunity we have as Americans to cast our own vote. RiverRun students voted on the PE activity for today, with a walk to the park winning out. Rains prevented us from following through on our plan, but we will do that walk to the park on the next non-rainy day that we can! Following our vote, we began work on graphing by making a bar graph of the voting results. Students also had another opportunity this week to gather data of their choice and depict the results in a graph. Elders also began work on reading/interpreting graphs.
During writing time, students learned about and wrote their own acrostic poem. Also this week, each student made an oral presentation, sharing information from their bird reports with their fellow students. (Some even read the entire report!)
Good thoughts to you and yours, Nancy
